Preparing for Your First Appointment With Stay Active

If this is your first rehabilitation session, you likely have many questions about how best to prepare for your visit, what happens during a visit and potential outcomes. We hope this page helps to explain things, but if you still have questions, please contact us – we are here to help.

If you have an online video appointment, we recommend that you ensure you have access to either a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone with a camera and a reliable Internet connection. Our team will provide information on how to join the online consultation.

Reciption - Stay Active Rehab

For your first in-person appointment or consultation, bring:

Your doctor referral (if applicable)
Diagnostic reports
Payment information
If your insurance is covering the cost of physiotherapy, bring your insurance card
If Workers’ Compensation covers you, bring your claim number and your case manager’s contact information
If you are covered by car insurance or an attorney lien, make sure you bring this information as well.

You should wear loose-fitting clothing to expose the area we will be evaluating and treating. For example, if you have a knee problem, it is best to wear shorts. For a shoulder problem, a tank top is a good choice, and for lower back problems, wear a loose-fitting shirt and shorts, again so we can perform a thorough examination.

What Happens During Your First Visit?

Our specialist will discuss the following:

Your medical history
Your current problems/complaints
Pain intensity, aggravations and ways to ease the problem
How this is impacting your daily activities or your functional limitations
Your goals with rehabilitation
Medications, tests and procedures that relate to your health

Our specialist will then perform an objective evaluation which may include some of the following:

Palpation – touching around the area of the pain/problem. This is done to check for tenderness, swelling, soft tissue integrity, tissue temperature, inflammation, etc.
Range of Motion (ROM) – the specialist will move your joint(s) to check for the quality of movement and any restrictions.
Muscle Testing – our specialist may check for strength and the quality of the muscle contraction. Pain and weakness may be noted. Often the muscle strength is graded. This is also part of a neurological screening.
Neurological Screening – the specialist may check how the nerves communicate with the muscles, sensing touch, pain, vibration or temperature. Reflexes may be assessed as well.
Special Tests – the specialist may perform special tests to confirm/rule out the presence of additional problems.
Posture Assessment – the positions of joints may be assessed.

The specialist will then formulate a list of issues you are having and how to treat them. Your first visit will usually take 30–60 minutes.

What Happens After Your Visit?

A plan is developed with your input. This includes treatment duration and frequency, home programs, patient education, short-term/long-term goals, and what is expected after your physiotherapy sessions are complete. This plan is created with input from you, your therapist and available diagnostic information such as X-ray or MRI reports. Some patients will continue with home exercises, others will continue with a gym exercise program and others will complete their rehabilitation and return to normal daily activities. It is important that you communicate your goals to your specialist, so he/she can develop a custom program for you.

I started going to this clinic in September 2020 for hamstring strain and IT band syndrome – which basically amounts to constant chronic pain in my leg.
